Five Element Acupuncture is a form of acupuncture which has origins in the more ancient tradition than present day alternatives. Its origins are found in the Han Dynasty of 206 BC - 220 AD and it treats on the levels of the mind, body and spirit.
Five Element Acupuncture itself was created in its present form in the 1970’s by JR Worsley, a western acupuncturist who travelled extensively in Japan, China and Korea to learn the origins of acupuncture and decided to consolidate this learning by teaching others a more spiritual form of acupuncture than was being disseminated from mainland China.
Five Element Acupuncture teaches that by treating on the deepest level of a patients energetic imbalance (the root) the symptoms and illnesses caused by this imbalance (the branches) will be restored to health.
In order to treat at this deep level Five Element Acupuncture takes into consideration the whole of a patients presenting symptoms (particularly their colour, sound, odour and emotion) and diagnoses the patient as one of the Five Phases (known as Five Elements) in the spectrum of yin and yang.
These Phases represent the movement of energy from low to high and by establishing where on the spectrum a patients deficiency's lie a practitioner can treat the patient’s energy more effectively than just treating the symptoms that are presented, which means that a patient can feel restored on many levels for example not only having a relieving of presenting symptoms, but also feeling an increase in energy and general well-being.
